How to Make Herb Rice Mix

We eat a lot of Rice-a-Roni, and I have been looking for a way to make my own rice mix. Ever since I started getting interested in food storage, I have been looking for a way to use my bulk grocery items. I mean I have 25 pounds of rice to do something with! Making your own rice mix is not only MUCH more inexpensive, it is also healthier for you too.

This recipe will fill a gallon sized storage container. I got my container at Walmart for about $5.

Herb Rice Mix

  • 9 c. long grained white rice
  • 6 tbsp. chicken boullion granules
  • 3/4 c. dried parsley
  • 3 tbsp. dried onion
  • 1 tbsp. garlic powder or garlic salt
  • 1 tbsp. thyme

When you are buying chicken boullion granules look for brands that don’t contain MSG. A lot of them do, but you should be able to find some that doesn’t. This is one of the things you are trying to get away from by making your own mix!

Mix all ingredients together in a gallon sized container like this one. To prepare: Bring 2 c. water and 1 tbsp. butter to a boil. Stir in 1 c. herb rice mix. Reduce heat, and simmer for 20 minutes or until all the water is absorbed. Serves 6 people.

This recipe makes 9 batches of rice. If you pay $15 for 25 pounds of rice, then this rice mix only costs pennies per meal instead of the dollar or more per box it costs at the store.

And the taste? No it does not taste exactly like Rice-a-Roni. Honestly, I think it tastes better. It has a lot of flavor, and tastes like real food as opposed to processed food! Easy and delicious.
