There’s something really satisfying about having a shelf full of little jars of homemade seasoning mixes.
This DIY Poultry Seasoning Mix is one of those pantry staples that makes cooking a little easier.
Instead of reaching for a store-bought packet, you can mix up your own blend with herbs and spices you probably already have in your pantry.
I especially like having this on hand during the fall and winter when I’m making more roasted chicken, turkey, soups, stews, and cozy family dinners.

Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons dried sage
- 1 tablespoon dried thyme
- 1 tablespoon dried rosemary
- 1 tablespoon dried marjoram
- 2 teaspoons dried parsley
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
How to Make Poultry Seasoning
Add all of the ingredients to a small bowl and stir until everything is evenly combined.

Transfer the seasoning mix to a small airtight jar or container. Label it Homemade Poultry Seasoning and store it in a cool, dry pantry.
I like making a double batch so I always have some ready when I’m cooking chicken or turkey.
How to Use Poultry Seasoning
This homemade poultry seasoning is useful for much more than Thanksgiving turkey.
Try it on:
- Roasted chicken
- Baked chicken breasts
- Whole roasted chicken
- Turkey
- Chicken soup
- Chicken and dumplings
- Slow cooker chicken
- Stuffing and dressing
- Roasted potatoes and vegetables
For chicken or turkey, start with about 1 to 2 teaspoons per pound of meat, depending on how strongly seasoned you like it.
You can also mix it with a little olive oil or melted butter and rub it over the outside of a whole chicken before roasting.
Why Make Your Own Seasoning Mixes?
Homemade seasoning mixes are one of my favorite ways to make a pantry more useful.
Once you have the individual herbs and spices on hand, it only takes a few minutes to make a batch. You also get to control exactly what goes into the mix and adjust the flavors to suit your family.
And honestly, there’s something about opening the pantry and seeing a row of little jars of homemade mixes that makes cooking from scratch feel a little easier.

Storage
Store your poultry seasoning in an airtight jar in a cool, dry pantry.
For the best flavor, I’d use it within about 6 months. The herbs won’t suddenly become unsafe after that, but they will gradually lose some of their flavor and aroma.
Tip: Make a double or triple batch while you already have everything out. Put the extra jars in the pantry so homemade poultry seasoning is always ready when you need it.
This is exactly the kind of small homemade pantry project that makes everyday cooking a little easier.
