I love having a shelf full of little jars of homemade mixes. They make getting dinner on the table so much easier, and this homemade fajita seasoning mix is one of those recipes you can reach for over and over again.
Instead of buying a packet every time you want to make fajitas, you can mix up your own with spices you probably already have in your pantry.
And you’re not limited to chicken. This seasoning works beautifully with steak, shrimp, chicken, vegetables, and fajita bowls.

Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons chili powder
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 tablespoon cumin
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon salt

How to Use Fajita Seasoning
For 1 pound of meat, start with about 2 tablespoons of seasoning mix.
You can use this seasoning for:
- Chicken fajitas
- Steak fajitas
- Shrimp fajitas
- Fajita bowls
- Sheet-pan fajitas
- Fajita vegetables
- Grilled chicken or steak
- Rice and bean bowls
For fajitas, toss your meat with the seasoning and a little oil before cooking. Add sliced onions and bell peppers to the skillet or grill alongside the meat.
For shrimp, I like using a little less seasoning and adding it just before cooking since shrimp cooks so quickly.
Make Fajita Bowls
This seasoning is also perfect for making quick fajita bowls. Layer seasoned chicken, steak, or shrimp over rice and add sautéed peppers and onions.
Top with whatever you have on hand—salsa, shredded cheese, avocado, sour cream, cilantro, or a squeeze of fresh lime.
It’s an easy way to turn the same basic seasoning mix into several different meals.
Why Make Your Own Fajita Seasoning?
Making your own seasoning mixes is one of those small things that makes homemade cooking easier.
You can make a larger batch once and have it ready for several meals. You also get to control the amount of salt and heat, and you don’t have to keep buying little packets from the store.
It’s another great addition to a DIY pantry or collection of homemade mixes.

Storage
Keep your fajita seasoning mix in an airtight jar in a cool, dry pantry.
For the best flavor, use it within about 6 months, although the spices will remain safe longer if stored properly. Give the jar a quick shake before each use to redistribute the ingredients.
Tip: Make a double batch while you’re already measuring the spices. One jar can go in the pantry and the extra makes a handy homemade gift for someone who enjoys cooking from scratch.
