DIY Produce Wash

I have to admit, I have never given a lot of thought to what is on my fruit and vegetables when I buy them from the store. I do rinse them off with water, but to make sure all pesticides and fertilizers have been removed from them, it is best to rinse them off with a DIY produce wash like this one.

Store-bought produce washes are not inexpensive. Because I am trying to save money, I don’t want to purchase things that I don’t have to. I did some searching around for DIY produce washes, and found an easy recipe.

DIY Produce Wash

Ingredients:

• 1 c. water
• 3/4 c. distilled white vinegar
• 1 tbsp. baking soda
• 1 tbsp. lemon juice

The secret to this DIY solution is the vinegar. If you are not already convinced from all the other home cleaning products you can make with vinegar, then hopefully this will convince you. Vinegar is good for cleaning almost anything!

To make your own produce wash, pour the above ingredients into a clean spray bottle. Gently shake to combine.

Spray your fruit or vegetables and let the solution set on the produce for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse and dry. This solution is not recommended for fruit like berries, or anything that would soak up the flavor of the solution.

If you have a large amount of produce to clean, or want to wash some lettuce or other salad green, it is easier to place them in the sink (scrubbed clean first) or a large bowl.

According to this web site, it is effective to place a mixture of 1 part vinegar and 3 parts water into the sink or bowl and let the produce soak for about 2 minutes. Rinse and dry.

When your family’s health is at stake, you can’t be too careful. This produce wash is very effective for cleaning the produce your family eats. It is also very inexpensive, non-toxic, and easy to make.
