Ingredients for Ginger Turmeric Shots

  • Fresh turmeric root: You’ll need a 2-inch piece of fresh turmeric root. Fresh turmeric can sometimes be tricky to find in a regular grocery store. I found mine at a smaller Whole Foods store, so check the fresh produce section of specialty grocery stores or natural food markets.
  • Fresh ginger root: A 2-inch piece of fresh ginger adds a spicy, warming flavor.
  • Lemon: One peeled lemon adds freshness and helps balance the strong flavors of the ginger and turmeric.
  • Black pepper: Just a dash adds a little extra flavor. Black pepper also contains piperine, which can increase the absorption of curcumin, one of the compounds found in turmeric.

How to Make Ginger Turmeric Wellness Shots

Prepare the ingredients. Wash the ginger and turmeric roots thoroughly. Peel the lemon, removing the outer rind and as much of the white pith as practical.

Juice the ingredients. Run the turmeric root, ginger root, and peeled lemon through your juicer according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Add the black pepper. Stir a dash of black pepper into the fresh juice.

Serve. Pour the juice into a small glass and enjoy immediately, or transfer it to a clean, covered container and refrigerate promptly.

Tips for Making Fresh Wellness Shots

Finding fresh turmeric: Fresh turmeric root looks similar to ginger, but its flesh is usually a vivid orange color. If you can’t find it in your usual grocery store, try a natural food market, specialty produce shop, or an Asian or Indian grocery store.

Be careful with turmeric stains. Fresh turmeric can stain cutting boards, countertops, clothing, and hands. Use a surface that’s easy to clean and rinse your juicer parts promptly after use.

Adjust the flavor. This recipe makes a strong, spicy shot. If the flavor is too intense, you can dilute it with a little water or add more lemon to suit your taste.

Make it fresh. For the best flavor, drink your shot soon after juicing. If you make it ahead, refrigerate it immediately in a clean, airtight container and use it promptly.

What Are Ginger Turmeric Wellness Shots Good For?

Ginger and turmeric are popular ingredients in many traditional food and wellness routines.

Ginger has a distinctive spicy flavor, while turmeric contains curcumin, a compound that has been studied for its biological effects.

Lemon contributes a fresh citrus flavor, and black pepper contains piperine, which can increase curcumin absorption.

Although these ingredients are often associated with wellness benefits, a homemade juice shot is not a treatment or cure for illness. Think of it as one flavorful way to incorporate fresh ingredients into a balanced diet.
