One of our readers had a cat that decided to start using their living room as a litter box. The cat urinated on every piece of their sectional couch as well as on their recliner. It smelled terrible! They had a really hard time figuring out how to remove the cat urine smell.

They used Natures Miracle that they purchased at the pet supply store but it didn’t work. Our readers gave their best suggestions on how to get rid of the cat urine smell in furniture.

Our favorite tip: If smell persists, use a product called Smells Begone (works great). Banishes odors from your home, car, or office with the original multipurpose, odor-eliminating, non-scented spray. Non-staining — works great on clothing or upholstery. Treats up to 400 square feet, leaving a mild, clean fragrance that lasts up to 90 days. Child- and pet-proof container.

Tip #1: We have many animals in our home. The best odor and stain remover for animal urine and feces is an enzyme spray. You want to buy the one that is based on enzymes and removes odor and stains. It works great on carpets, upholstery, sofas, and other living room furniture.

A little goes a long way, dilute 2 to 1* for fresh areas and regular strength for old or areas with heavy marks. *2 parts spray 1 part water. Follow directions thoroughly.

P.S. Cats generally do this because of health but more often then not it is attitude. That is the one sure way they can tell you they are upset.Generally speaking they will go to the property of the one they are mad at and then make their mess.

They do know what belongs to each household member by smell and sight so, if that area of your sectional was predominantly used by someone their smell will be on it, and then its bombs away.

Tip #2: Since you’ve already treated the area(s) with Nature’s Miracle now all you have to do is to treat the same area(s) with a strong solution of OxyClean.

I use the Nature’s Miracle first to neutralize the acidic Ph in the urine, let it sit for 48+ hours (the longer the better) and then treat the same area(s) with a strong solution of OxyClean.

I use a four cup measuring cup, fill it up with very warm water, then add two scoops of the OxyClean and stir until it has dissolved. Then pour entire contents on area. There has only been one time when I have had to retreat with the OxyClean.

This ALWAYS works for me leaving the area smelling fresh and clean. Good Luck!!! By the way, DO NOT have your beloved friend put down.

This is your solution to this problem. Our cat had done this when he is feeling stress or when he’s mad that we left for too long. Good luck!!

Tip #3: I recently had that problem with my tom cats just before I had them fixed. I used a combination of a vinegar/water mixture & an orange oil cleaner. Orange oil and vinegar neutralize odors (test a small area on your couch first).

After a month of cleaning the area on a weekly basis and using the spray, I then started using Febreeze on it. MY HOUSE SMELLS GREAT!

Tip #4: If fresh: Cool water blot. Neutralize odor with white vinegar, 1 tablespoon per 1/2 cup water. Blot in, blot out, rinse, blot dry. If not fresh: Use a good quality All Fabric Bleach – one teaspoon to 1/2 cup of water.  Scrub in, let set 10-15 minutes. Blot, rinse, blot.

Tip #5: The company who cleans our carpets said that “white vinegar” will neutralize the cat urine smell, which it has.
