I love having homemade seasoning mixes in the pantry. They make everyday cooking so much easier, and this Cajun seasoning mix is one of those blends you’ll find yourself reaching for all the time.
It’s smoky, savory, a little spicy, and made with simple spices you probably already have on hand.
Make a batch once and keep it in the pantry for seasoning chicken, shrimp, vegetables, rice, potatoes, and all kinds of easy homemade meals.
Why Make Your Own Cajun Seasoning?
Making your own seasoning blends is an easy way to keep your homemade pantry stocked with useful staples. You also have control over the ingredients and can adjust the heat to your liking.
If you already have homemade hamburger seasoning, steak seasoning, meatloaf seasoning, and meatball seasoning in your pantry, this is another great blend to add to the collection.

Cajun Seasoning Mix Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons paprika
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon dried thyme
- 2 teaspoons black pepper
- 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
How to Make Cajun Seasoning
Add all of the spices to a small bowl and stir until evenly combined.
Transfer the seasoning mix to a clean, airtight jar or spice container. Label the jar and store it in a cool, dry pantry.
That’s all there is to it! Making homemade seasoning mixes really can be that simple.
How to Use Cajun Seasoning
This seasoning is especially good with:
- Chicken
- Shrimp
- Fish
- Sausage
- Rice
- Roasted potatoes
- Vegetables
- Pasta
- Beans
- Soups and stews
Start with a small amount and add more to taste. If you prefer a milder Cajun seasoning, reduce the cayenne pepper. For more heat, you can increase it.
Cajun Seasoning for Chicken
One of my favorite ways to use this seasoning is on chicken. Sprinkle the seasoning over chicken breasts, thighs, or tenders before grilling, baking, or pan-searing.
You can also combine the seasoning with a little oil before coating the chicken. It makes a quick and flavorful dinner without needing a complicated marinade.
Cajun Seasoning for Shrimp
Cajun seasoning and shrimp are a perfect combination. Toss peeled shrimp with a little oil and Cajun seasoning, then cook until the shrimp are opaque and cooked through.
Serve them over rice, pasta, or vegetables for a quick homemade dinner.

How to Store Homemade Cajun Seasoning
Store your Cajun seasoning in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Keep it away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
I like using a small glass jar with a lid because it’s easy to shake the seasoning directly over whatever I’m cooking.
For the best flavor, use dried spices that are still fresh and fragrant. If your spices have been sitting in the pantry for years and have lost most of their aroma, it’s probably time to replace them.
Make Your Own Seasoning Mixes
Once you start making your own seasoning blends, it’s easy to build a little collection in your pantry.
Homemade seasoning mixes are inexpensive, convenient, and make simple homemade living a little easier.
This Cajun seasoning is another great addition to your from-scratch pantry, especially if you enjoy making quick meals with ingredients you already have at home.
