I thought everyone had heard of Texas Sheet Cake, but I was wrong. After I prepared this recipe and had a bunch of people try it, none of them had ever heard of it before.

It is actually a really old recipe, like grandma used to make. It is really easy to prepare, and people can’t believe how good they are and that they’ve never had them before.

If you’ve never had Texas Sheet Cake before it is like a really rich brownie. If you want the best results, make sure to use real butter. It really gives this cake its flavor.

Cake Ingredients:

2 sticks (1 cup) butter
1 cup water
4 tablespoons baking cocoa
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
1/2 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon baking soda

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease a cookie sheet that has sides on it.

In a large sauce pan, melt butter and add water and baking cocoa. Bring to a boil.

Remove pan from heat. In a small bowl mix together flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda. Stir flour mixture into the chocolate mixture, mixing well.

Stir in eggs, and then stir in sour cream. Pour batter into greased cookie sheet and bake for 20 minutes.

Prepare frosting while cake is baking.

Frosting Ingredients:

1 stick (1/2 cup butter)
4 tablespoons baking cocoa
6 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups powdered sugar
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Melt butter in a sauce pan. Add cocoa and milk. Bring to a boil. Remove pan from heat and use a hand mixer to beat in powdered sugar and vanilla.

When you remove the cake from the oven, immediately spread the frosting on top. Sprinkle chopped walnuts on top if desired. Let pan cool completely before cutting and serving.

If you want to make a bigger sheet cake to feed a larger crowd, you can purchase an extra large cookie sheet like this one that you can purchase from Amazon. Just double the recipe ingredients and follow the recipe as printed above.
