What Are Jalapeño Mummies?

Jalapeño mummies are basically a Halloween version of jalapeño poppers. Instead of simply baking the stuffed peppers, you wrap them in thin strips of crescent dough so they look like little mummies.

Leave a small opening near the top for the eyes, and you have an easy Halloween appetizer that looks much more complicated than it actually is.

Ingredients

  • 10 fresh jalapeño peppers
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded pepper jack or cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 package refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Candy eyes for decorating

Optional: Add cooked, crumbled bacon to the cheese filling if you want to turn these into bacon jalapeño popper mummies.

How to Make Halloween Jalapeño Mummies

Prepare the Jalapeños

Preheat your oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Wash the jalapeños and slice them in half lengthwise. Carefully remove the seeds and membranes.

If you want to keep more of the heat, leave a little of the membrane intact.

If you’re working with a lot of hot peppers, wearing disposable gloves is a good idea.

Make the Filling

In a small bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

Mix until everything is well combined.

Spoon the cheese mixture into each jalapeño half. Don’t overfill them because the filling will expand a little as it bakes.

Wrap the Mummies

Unroll the crescent roll dough and pinch the seams together if you’re using regular crescent rolls.

Cut the dough into thin strips.

Wrap the strips around each stuffed jalapeño, leaving a small opening near the top where the eyes will go.

You don’t need to wrap them perfectly. In fact, the uneven strips make them look more like little mummies!

Place the wrapped jalapeños on the prepared baking sheet.

Add the Egg Wash

Whisk together the egg and one tablespoon of water.

Lightly brush the crescent dough with the egg wash. This helps the dough turn that beautiful golden brown color as it bakes.

Bake

Bake for about 12–15 minutes, or until the crescent dough is puffed and golden brown.

Keep an eye on them toward the end because crescent dough can brown quickly.

Remove them from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes.

Add the Eyes

While the mummies are still slightly warm, carefully add two candy eyes to each one.

And that’s it!

Your spooky little jalapeño mummies are ready for the Halloween party.

Can I Make These Less Spicy?

Absolutely.

For a milder appetizer, choose larger jalapeños and remove all of the seeds and membranes.

You can also substitute mini sweet peppers if you’re making these for people who don’t enjoy spicy food. They still make adorable little mummies.

Can I Make Jalapeño Mummies Ahead of Time?

You can assemble the jalapeño mummies several hours ahead of time and keep them refrigerated until you’re ready to bake them.

For the best texture, I’d bake them shortly before serving.

If you have leftovers, refrigerate them in an airtight container and reheat them in the oven until warmed through.

These would be so much fun on a Halloween appetizer table alongside some of your other spooky food.

They’re especially cute for a Halloween party because they’re easy to pick up and eat, and they look festive without requiring a lot of decorating.

You could even make a platter with mummy dogs and jalapeño mummies for a whole Halloween mummy-themed food table.
