Looking for an easy Halloween craft to make with the kids? These coffee filter ghosts are simple, inexpensive, and so much fun to make.
You only need a few basic supplies, and you can turn a handful of coffee filters into a whole little collection of friendly ghosts.
This is a great Halloween craft for preschool and elementary-age kids because there’s no complicated crafting involved.
What You Need
- White coffee filters
- Black construction paper
- Glue
- Scissors
- Pencil
- White paper or cardstock
- String or yarn, if you want to hang your ghosts
- Optional: googly eyes
How to Make a Coffee Filter Ghost
1. Flatten the coffee filter
Start by laying a white coffee filter flat on your work surface.
If you’re making these with younger children, you can prepare several coffee filters ahead of time.

2. Make the ghost’s face
Cut two small circles from black construction paper for the eyes.
You can also cut out a small oval or circle for the mouth.
Glue the eyes and mouth onto the coffee filter.
For a fun variation, use googly eyes instead.
3. Give your ghost some shape
Gather the coffee filter slightly underneath the face so the bottom hangs loosely.
You don’t need to make every ghost exactly the same. Some can be long and skinny, while others can be wider and more wavy.
4. Let the ghosts dry
Set your ghosts aside for a few minutes to let the glue dry.
Once they’re dry, they’re ready to display!
Turn Them Into a Ghost Garland
Want to make more than one?
Make several coffee filter ghosts and turn them into a cute Halloween garland.
Punch a small hole near the top of each ghost and thread them onto a piece of string or yarn.
Space the ghosts out along the string and hang your garland across a mantel, doorway, window, or wall.
You could also hang individual ghosts from the ceiling so they look like they’re floating.
Make Each Ghost Different
This is one of those crafts where it’s fun to let the kids take over.
Give each ghost a different expression. Make some happy, some surprised, and some a little spooky.
You could even make tiny ghosts and one or two giant ghosts for a whole ghost family.
