Looking for an easy Halloween craft to make with the kids? This handprint spider craft is a fun project that only takes a few simple supplies—and of course, you get an adorable little handprint keepsake out of it.
It’s especially fun for younger kids because they can make their spider using their own handprints and then decorate it however they like.
What You Need
- Black construction paper or cardstock
- White paper
- Googly eyes
- Scissors
- Glue
- Black marker
- Pencil
- Optional: glitter, crayons, or colored markers for decorating
How to Make a Handprint Spider
1. Trace the hands
Place your child’s hands on a sheet of black construction paper with the fingers spread apart.
Trace around both hands with a pencil.
You’ll want to use two handprints for each spider.

2. Cut out the handprints
Carefully cut around both traced handprints.
The fingers will become the spider’s legs!
For younger children, an adult can do the cutting while they work on decorating the spider.
3. Put the spider together
Place the two handprints next to each other with the palms touching or slightly overlapping.
The eight fingers become the spider’s eight legs.
Glue the palms together.
You now have the basic shape of your spider.
4. Add the spider’s eyes
Glue on two googly eyes.
You can also make your own eyes from white paper and draw the pupils with a black marker.
And don’t feel like your spider has to have only two eyes! Let the kids give their spiders as many silly eyes as they want.
5. Decorate your spider
This is where the kids can get creative.
Add a smile, eyebrows, spots, or even little fangs.
You could also add glitter or colorful paper to make each spider unique.
Make a Halloween Spider Family
This craft is especially cute when you make several spiders.
Have each child make their own spider using their handprints, or make spiders from different-sized hands to create a whole family.
You can write the child’s name and the year on the back, too.
It’s a simple Halloween keepsake you’ll be glad you saved.
Turn Your Spiders Into Decorations
Once you’ve made your handprint spiders, there are several ways to use them around the house.
Glue one onto a piece of paper to create a Halloween scene.
Or make several spiders and attach them to a long piece of string to create a spooky spider garland.
You could even add a paper spider web behind each one.
