These mini caramel apples are such a fun twist on traditional caramel apples.
Instead of dipping an entire apple, you use a melon baller to scoop out little round pieces of apple and turn them into bite-sized caramel apple treats.
I love that you can make several different varieties from the same batch. In the photo, I made some with chopped nuts, some with crushed chocolate cookies, and some with colorful sprinkles.
They’re perfect for a fall party, Halloween party, classroom celebration, or a fun afternoon treat with the kids.

Why You’ll Love These Mini Caramel Apples
Traditional caramel apples can be a little messy to eat. These little caramel apple bites are much easier to handle, and they’re small enough that everyone can try several different flavors.

They’re also fun to customize.
Once you have the caramel ready, set out several bowls of toppings and let everyone decorate their own. It’s an easy fall activity that doubles as dessert.
And because you’re using a melon baller, you get those cute little round apple pieces that make these look completely different from traditional caramel apples.
What You’ll Need
You don’t need many ingredients to make these.
You’ll need:
- Apples
- Soft caramel candies or caramel bits
- Small wooden sticks
- Chopped nuts
- Chocolate sandwich cookies
- Colorful sprinkles
You’ll also want parchment or wax paper to place the finished caramel apples on while the caramel sets.
How to Make Mini Caramel Apples
Start by washing the apples really well and drying them completely. The apples need to be dry so the caramel will stick.
Scoop the Apples
This is the fun part.
Use a melon baller to scoop small, round pieces of apple from the whole apples. Try to keep the pieces fairly uniform in size.
You can get quite a few little apple balls from each apple, depending on the size of your melon baller.
Insert a small wooden stick into each apple ball. Small popsicle sticks, lollipop sticks, or short wooden skewers work well.
Prepare the Caramel
Melt your caramel according to the package directions.
If you’re using individually wrapped caramel candies, place them in a saucepan over low heat and stir frequently until they’re smooth and melted.
If necessary, add a small amount of water or milk to help thin the caramel.
Keep the caramel warm while you’re dipping the apples.
Dip the Apple Bites
Dip each apple ball into the melted caramel, turning it gently so the apple is coated.
Allow the excess caramel to drip back into the pan before adding your toppings.
You’ll want to work fairly quickly because the caramel will begin to set as it cools.
Chocolate Cookie Caramel Apples
For the dark caramel apples in the photo, crush chocolate sandwich cookies into fine crumbs.
Dip an apple ball into the caramel and immediately roll it in the cookie crumbs.
Gently press the crumbs into the caramel if necessary.
These would be especially fun for Halloween because the dark cookie coating gives them a spooky look.
Nut-Covered Caramel Apples
For the nut-covered version, finely chop your favorite nuts.
I think peanuts, walnuts, or pecans would all be delicious.
Dip the apple ball in caramel and immediately roll it in the chopped nuts. Gently press the nuts into the caramel so they stick.
These have a classic fall flavor that would be perfect for an autumn gathering.
Sprinkle Caramel Apples
For the colorful caramel apples, dip the apple balls in caramel and immediately roll them in sprinkles.
You can use whatever colors you like.
For Halloween, try orange, black, purple, yellow, or Halloween-themed sprinkles. For a general fall party, you could use autumn colors instead.
This is also a great option if you’re making these with kids because they can choose their own toppings.
More Topping Ideas
Once you start making these, you can get really creative with the toppings.
Try:
- Chopped pecans
- Chopped peanuts
- Walnuts
- Crushed pretzels
- Toffee bits
- Mini chocolate chips
- Graham cracker crumbs
- Toasted coconut
- Halloween sprinkles
- Fall-colored sprinkles
- Crushed chocolate cookies
You could even set up a mini caramel apple bar with several toppings and let everyone make their own.
Tips for Making Mini Caramel Apples
Dry the apples completely. Any moisture on the surface can make it harder for the caramel to stick.
Prepare your toppings first. Once you start dipping, you’ll want everything ready to go.
Keep the caramel warm. If the caramel gets too thick, it becomes harder to coat the little apple balls.
Don’t make the apple balls too small. They need to be large enough to hold the stick and support the caramel and toppings.
Let the caramel set before serving. Place the finished apples on parchment or wax paper and give them time to firm up.
I love these because they can go in so many different directions.
Make the nut-covered ones for a classic fall dessert, the chocolate cookie ones for Halloween, and the sprinkle-covered ones for the kids.
They’re also much easier to serve than full-size caramel apples. Put them on a platter and let everyone grab one—or a few!
These would be especially cute alongside other Halloween treats like Halloween Snack Mix, Deviled Egg Eyeballs, Spider Cookies, and Candy Corn Fudge.
If you’re looking for an easy fall or Halloween dessert that feels a little different, these mini caramel apples are definitely worth trying.
