Looking for a simple fall craft to make with the kids? This paper plate pumpkin is an easy project that only takes a few basic supplies.
It’s perfect for Halloween, fall decorating, or a fun afternoon craft project. Kids can make their pumpkins as simple or as silly as they want!
What You Need
- Paper plate
- Orange paint
- Paintbrush
- Black construction paper
- Green construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue
- Pencil
How to Make a Paper Plate Pumpkin
1. Paint the paper plate
Start by painting the front of the paper plate orange.
You may need to use two coats of paint to get good coverage. Let the paint dry completely before moving on to the next step.
2. Make the pumpkin face
While the paint is drying, cut eyes and a mouth from black construction paper.

You can make a traditional jack-o’-lantern face, or let the kids come up with their own expressions.
Glue the pieces onto the painted paper plate once it’s dry.
3. Add the stem and leaves
Cut a small stem from brown or green construction paper and glue it to the top of the pumpkin.
You can also cut out a couple of green leaves or curly vines to add around the stem.
4. Let it dry
Once everything is glued in place, let your paper plate pumpkin dry completely.
Then hang it on the refrigerator, classroom wall, or anywhere you want a little homemade fall decoration.
Make Each Pumpkin Different
This is one of those crafts where there really isn’t a wrong way to do it.
Try making:
- A traditional jack-o’-lantern
- A silly pumpkin
- A spooky pumpkin
- A smiling pumpkin
- A whole pumpkin family
You could even write each child’s name on the back of their pumpkin and save them as little fall keepsakes.
Paper plate crafts are some of my favorites because they’re inexpensive and easy to put together. You probably already have most of the supplies in your craft cupboard.
