DIY Vick’s Vaporub

I don’t know why I was so surprised when I found out that you can make your own Vick’s VapoRub. I was even more excited when I realized that I already had all the ingredients I needed to make it.

I have never stopped to look at the ingredients on Vick’s VapoRub before. If you look at the list of ingredients, you will see that it has turpentine oil in it! For some reason that doesn’t seem like something I want to be rubbing into my children’s skin.

It turns out that you can make your own VapoRub by using coconut oil and eucalyptus or peppermint oil. What was funny was that I already had coconut oil from when I made homemade Magic Shell ice cream topping and I had eucalyptus oil from when I made my own laundry softener spray. I found the eucalyptus oil for only a couple of dollars in the pharmacy section of Walmart.

I put about 1/2 c. coconut oil and 10 drops or so of eucalyptus oil in a half pint sized canning jar and mixed them together. I found that the coconut oil stayed solid enough to use as a rub, but if yours is too liquid, you can add a little melted beeswax to it and it will harden.

Use just as you would Vick’s VapoRub. It smells exactly like it! In addition to putting it on your chest to treat congestion, it can be put on the soles of your feet before you go to bed. Rub it on your feet and put socks on over top. A lot of moms swear by this when they have kids up at night coughing.

  1. Thank you! I’m sick, at home, there is a killing cold outside. I have all of these ingredients at home; many of the homemade vapor rub recipes have items that I do not have at home. I’ll try it now.
