Plum Custard Kuchen

Until today, I don’t think I have ever made kuchen before. I think my mom made it for us once in awhile when I was a kid, but that was a long time ago! Kuchen is the German word for cake. According to Wikipedia, kuchen can be a pie-like pastry with custard filling, a rolled pastry, a coffeecake, a cheesecake-like pastry, or a pie-like pastry. This recipe has a custard filling. It is really easy to make, and delicious too. A great easy dessert to impress your guests with.

1 c. flour
1 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. butter
2 tbsp. heavy cream
1 egg
2 1/2 c. plums, pitted and sliced

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl mix together flour, sugar, and baking powder. Using a fork or pastry cutter, “cut in” butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in whipping cream and egg. Press the mixture into the bottom of an ungreased 9-inch baking dish. Arrange the sliced plums on top. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Custard Ingredients:

1/2 c. whipping cream
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 egg

Mix custard ingredients together and pour over the plums. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until custard has set. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator.
