Egg-in-a-hole is a favorite breakfast treat for kids. The idea has been around a long time. I had forgotten about them until my husband whipped them up for our kids one morning. His mom had always made them for him when he was a kid.

To make a basic egg-in-a-hole you will need:
- Bread
- Margarine or butter
- Egg
- Biscuit cutter or cookie cutter
You can make an egg-in-a-hole for breakfast any time of year. However, they are fun to get creative with for the holidays.
All you have to do is butter a piece of bread and use a biscuit or cookie cutter to cut a shape out of the piece of bread. For just your basic egg-in-a-hole, use a round biscuit cutter. For a fun holiday treat, use a seasonal cookie cutter. For Valentine’s Day I used a heart-shaped cookie cutter, and for Easter I found a really cute cookie cutter shaped like an Easter bunny.
After you remove the cut out, place both the remaining piece of bread and the cut out in a heated frying pan, buttered side down. Butter the top sides of the bread.
Carefully crack an egg into the center of the piece of bread that has the “hole” in it. Cook until egg begins to set and then cook both pieces of the bread on the other side.
The first time I made these I made the mistake of cooking the egg all the way through, thinking my boys would not want to eat runny eggs. They were quick to inform me that the piece of bread that was cut out was to be used to soak up the runny egg on their plate so I needed to make them a new egg!
Have fun with these, they are a great way to make breakfast special for your kids.
