I remember my mom making bunny salads for my sister and me when we were kids. I always thought they were so cute. They would look great on your Easter table, but you don’t have to wait until Easter to make them. They are great any time of year.
First find a serving plate for your bunny salad. I have some small bunny plates I always get out at Easter time. I thought one of these would work great for this salad. Here are the other ingredients you will need:
- Pear halves
- Mini marshmallows
- Maraschino cherries
- Lettuce leaves
First arrange several lettuce leaves on your serving plate.
Place a pear half on top of the lettuce. This will be the bunny’s body. I have to say that I was very disappointed with the generic canned pears I bought to make our salads. When I opened the can the pears were very mushy and were falling apart. No good for making bunnies at all! You might want to try a name brand to see if the quality is any better. If you happened to can pears last summer, these would work the best of all.
There are a number of ways to transform your pear half into a bunny. For the eyes and/or nose you can use raisins, craisins, or cut up maraschino cherries. I used two small raisins for eyes and a piece of maraschino cherry for the nose.
I used a mini marshmallow for the tail. Some people like to use a spoonful of cottage cheese for the tail.
For the ears, I used my fingers to shape two mini marshmallows into the shapes of ears and laid them on top of the bunny’s head. Other people have used slivered almonds or carrot sticks for ears. If you want your bunny to have whiskers, carrot sticks or toothpicks would work well.
Having your kids help create their salad will make them more excited to eat it. Use your imagination and have fun making long-lasting memories with your kids.
