DIY All-Purpose Cleaner

I have started making a variety of homemade household cleaners, and after trying out several I found this recipe for an all-purpose general cleaner at the Family Homestead web site.

If you are looking for a chemical-free cleaner, then this cleaner isn’t for you because it contains rubbing alcohol and ammonia. For a great vinegar-based cleaner try this homemade cleaning spray. This cleaner is good for tough jobs, like bathroom cleaning. The vinegar-based one is great for cleaning up around the kitchen.

The great thing about this cleaner is that it is VERY inexpensive. Ammonia and rubbing alcohol are very inexpensive and are great cleaners. For the essential oil, you can find bottles of mixed essential oils at Walmart for about $2 a bottle (they are located next to the candles and potpourri). I chose a lavender and vanilla blend that smells really great.

All Purpose Cleaner

  • Empty gallon milk jug
  • 2 Tablespoons ammonia
  • 1 teaspoon dish soap
  • 2 cups rubbing alcohol
  • a few drops of your favorite essential oil (opt)

Combine the above ingredients in a clean, empty gallon milk jug. Fill the remainder of the container with hot water. You can add a couple of drops of food coloring, if desired. You can pour this into a spray container for smaller cleaning jobs.

I have been using this all-purpose cleaner for several months, and it is great. I even tried it in my carpet cleaner when I ran out of carpet cleaning solution, and it worked great to remove dirt and didn’t harm my carpet.
