Have you ever heard of Poo-Pourri, the “before you go” spray? I’d never heard of this before until recently, but apparently people are paying $10 a bottle for this stuff, because it really works!

A lot of people start out buying Poo-Pourri for a gag gift for Christmas, and then when people find out it really works, they want to buy more.
The way the spray works is that you spray the spray in the toilet before doing your business, and the oil in the spray creates a protective barrier on the surface of the water in your toilet, keeping the scent down where it can’t escape.
If you are curious about if this scented “No. 2” spray really works, then you can try it yourself by making your own at home. You will need:
- Small spray bottle
- Rubbing alcohol
- Essential oil
If you are worried about oil hurting your plumbing, this mixture is mostly water so the small amount of oil being used shouldn’t hurt your plumbing.
To make the spray, place 30-40 drops of your favorite essential oil(s) in the bottle. My favorite is lavender oil. Feel free to mix and match scents until you get one that you like.
Place 1 tsp. rubbing alcohol in the bottle and fill the bottle the rest of the way up with water. I used a mini funnel to pour mine in the jar. These funnels are great for pouring things into small bottles.
You can usually find small plastic spray bottles in the travel section at Walmart or Target for about $1. These work great for most people. Just keep in mind, however, if you use a citrus oil like lemon or orange, the acid in the oil could slowly eat at the plastic. I found some inexpensive glass bottles at Amazon like these bottles. If you buy 6 at a time, they are still not much more than $1 a bottle and you can refill them and get a lot of use out of them. They look a lot nicer too.
Before using the spray, shake it up a little to make sure the oil is distributed throughout the bottle and then spray into the toilet water 3 or 4 times. The purpose of the rubbing alcohol is to help combine the oil and the water.
That’s it! Some people like to print out a catchy little poem to place next to the bottle to let people know what the spray is for when they visit your bathroom (this sticker paper is great for making custom stickers and labels). Make a couple of bottles and carry one with you wherever you go, you never know when you are going to need it!
