A lot of people (including myself) try to get by with the bare essentials in order to save money, but the holidays are a great time to pick up some of the things you can get (for yourself or for a friend or family member who loves to can!) to make canning a lot more easy AND fun. Here are my top 10 favorite holiday gift ideas for home canners!

Food Strainer and Sauce Maker

If you like to make and can sauces, a food strainer and sauce maker like this one is a must. One of the things about these that I like is that parts of it are made out of aluminum and stainless steel so they will last a long time. When you make an investment in a piece of kitchen equipment, how long it will last is definitely important.

This sauce maker is perfect for making tomato sauce and applesauce very quickly. Just run the cooked apples and tomatoes through it and it removes the peels for you. You can also use it to strain fruit for juices and for making jams and jellies, so if someone you know does a lot of canning, an accessory like this really comes in handy and has many different uses.

Food Mill

This food mill is similar to the food strainer and sauce maker, it basically has the same function. One of the main differences is that this food mill is made almost entirely of stainless steel, while the sauce maker contains more plastic.

Another difference is that you clamp the sauce maker to the counter top. This food mill sets on top of a bowl or pot. This food mill is what I personally use to make applesauce. It comes with three different grinding discs so that you can strain sauces of different thicknesses. I use this food mill to make all my sauces for canning.

This food mill is also fairly small. It disassembles easily and you can rinse it quickly in the sink and put it away when you are done using it.

Vegetable Chopper

I love, love, love, this vegetable chopper. If you have ever chopped mounds and mounds of tomatoes, onions, and bell peppers for canning salsa then you know how great it would be to have something do the chopping for you.

This vegetable chopper does a great job of chopping vegetables uniformly to make your salsa beautiful every time. And you will get everything chopped in half of the time of having to chop it all by hand.

It comes with several different size chopping blades and also contains a measuring cup so that you can measure your vegetables as you chop. It is very easy to rinse and wash when you are done using it.

Mandoline Slicer

For people who like to make bread and butter pickles, this mandoline slicer is a must. It slices all kinds of vegetables thinly and perfectly for canning and also for many other types of recipes.

It folds up nicely and is easy to store away in the cupboard when you are done with it.

This slicer comes with several different blades that you can use to slice different types of vegetables. Any home cook would love to have a slicer like this in their kitchen.

Fine Mesh Stainless Steel Strainers

This fine mesh strainer set is an inexpensive gift to give to a friend or family member who loves canning.

These strainers are different from regular strainers in that the mesh is much finer than that of regular strainers. You need these kinds of strainers for making homemade syrups like homemade blackberry or blueberry syrup.

For less than $20 you get three strainers in this set, all with different size mesh for straining fruits for different thicknesses of syrups. These strainers are a great addition to any kitchen. I use mine all of the time.

Jelly Strainer Stand and Bag

A jelly strainer stand and bag is a must-have for jelly makers. For years I only made jam, not knowing that all I needed was this inexpensive little contraption to make perfect jelly every time.

This small gift (that costs less than $10!) will make any jelly maker’s life much easier. All you do is put the cooked fruit in the mesh bag and let the juice drip out of the bottom to make perfectly clear jelly with no fuss or mess. I know I couldn’t live without mine.

Immersion Blender

One of the best investments I have made in my canning efforts is getting an immersion blender. An immersion blender is a hand blender that you plug in and use right in your pot while cooking.

I use my immersion blender for all sorts of recipes. For canning I use it to make apple butter, sweet and sour sauce, barbecue sauce, and to make any other recipe that requires a smooth consistency. You just put the blender right in the pan and blend until smooth!

These blenders are really easy to rinse off on the sink before you put them away. I use mine all of the time and couldn’t live without it.

Juicer Steamer

Okay I’m going to be honest and admit that I don’t have one of these yet, but I really want one! It is definitely on MY wish list (does anyone want to get me one!?).

These juicer steamers are amazing. If you like to make juices like homemade grape and apple juices, this steamer will make quick work of it.

This juicer steamer is more on the expensive side, it will cost you closer to $100. For serious juice makers, however, it is a great investment and make your life much easier when canning juices.

You may want to put this juicer steamer on YOUR holiday wish list!

All New Ball Book of Canning

There are a lot of great canning books out there, but the essential canning book is the Ball Book of Canning. It’s hard to find good reliable canning recipes, and the Ball canning book always keeps their tried and true recipes up to date.

This cookbook is great for new and experienced canners alike. The Ball canning book is constantly being updated and new recipes added. It is a great addition to any canner’s bookshelf.

Canning Lid Rack

This canning lid rack is another great inexpensive gift idea for canners (it’s under $10!)

These canning lid racks hold a dozen canning lids for easy sterilizing. You just hang the lid rack on the edge of a pan of boiling water so that the lids don’t fall down in the pan where it’s hard to pick them up.

This lid rack makes a great last minute gift idea, pick one up for your favorite canner today!
